Just Cause Developer Reveals Cancelled Iron Man Game
The Marvel Entertainment empire continues its wide presence and dominance in the grand media landscape, with video games being especially reflective of that presence. Marvel has especially been active the past few years, with several developers gaining access to Marvel licenses and utilizing their characters in major game projects. Some of these include Insomniac’s Spider-Man games and Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers game. Iron Man has become one of the most popular Marvel heroes, thanks to the hit blockbuster films starring Robert Downey Jr. However, it seems that a cancelled Iron Man game by the Just Cause developer could not see the light of day.
Avalanche Studios co-founder Cristofer Sundberg recently spoke with MinnMax for an interview released on their official YouTube channel. The Just Cause developer was approached by Disney in 2012 to create a game focused on Tony Stark’s genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist. This game would have been in the works leading up to the release of Iron Man 3 in theaters, though it would release after the fact and not as a promotional tie-in. Nevertheless, Disney was pushing for a fairly quick turnaround schedule for development and release, which ultimately seemed unfeasible for Sundberg. As he describes the state of the project after two years of progress:
“I was a mess by the end. Shortening development time, increasing budget. We would have had to hire 70-80 people to the team that I would have had responsibility to find a new project for. But development time was shortened down so much that it was impossible. It would have broken the studio completely.”
Sundberg followed this up by describing the typical process of hiring development employees and the timeframe of projects like these to describe just how difficult it would have been to pull off this cancelled Iron Man game in such a short amount of time. While this project ended up getting the plug pulled, fans have been able to play as Iron Man in games like Marvel’s Avengers and the LEGO Marvel games since. Hopefully, one day though Tony Stark gets a game focused on himself in the spotlight. What more could a narcissist want?
