While not necessarily the most exciting thing to come out of today’s Ubisoft Forward event, the publisher’s upcoming free-to-play battle royale title Hyper Scape still represents a unique spin on what has become a rather tired genre, even if the game riffs off Ready Player One to make that happen.

The cinematic trailer that was unveiled during the event paints a picture of an overcrowded world set around 50 years in the future where the only real escape from the “crush of the mega cities” is the Hyper Scape. Like I said, Ready Player One. Check out the cinematic trailer below:

Hyper Scape appears to offer a more vertical approach than most typical battle royale games, featuring unique unlockable abilities that will allow players to climb skyscrapers and traverse rooftops with ease. Thankfully, the Open Beta for the game is now live as of today, so those interested in checking the title out can do so now. Here’s the Open Beta gameplay trailer:

• Urban Battle Royale – Fight your way through the 7 unique districts of Neo Arcadia, a virtual city featuring imposing landmarks that bring verticality to the next level. From sky-scraping towers to open plazas, from streets to rooftops, Neo Arcadia will push you to constantly adapt to your surroundings.
• Close-quarters City Combat – Hyper Scape is a brand new and intense First-Person multiplayer game that lets you define your playstyle to dominate the battleground. Dive into tense and vertical matches, where you (double) jump from streets to rooftops using unique weapons and unleashing powerful Hacks that bend the rules to your advantage.
• A Fresh Take On Battle Royale – Learn to avoid the Blight that progressively dissolves Neo Arcadia’s districts in varied patterns throughout each match. Maximize the Effects Cards played by the AI Game Master during the match, changing the game on the fly for all contenders.
