Dota 2 Announces Its Own Battle Royale Game Mode, Coming Soon

Dota 2 has finally given in to the madness that is battle royale, channeling its MOBA energies into a new game mode inspired by the premise that turned PUBG and Fortnite into gaming phenomenons. The apple fell rather far, though, as the new mode, called The Underhollow, is centered around a quest for, of all things, cheese. Glorious, Roshefort cheese.

Announced as part of – and exclusive to holders of – Dota 2’s 2018 International Battle Pass, The Underhollow is touted as “a multi-team dungeon clash,” wherein several three-player squads fight and search their way through an always-changing underground labyrinth in search of “Roshan’s rarest cheese,” with the last team standing earning the best rewards. Here’s the breakdown of the new mode from Dota 2:

Dota 2 – The Underhollow

  • The Ravening Begins – Deep below Roshan’s lair, a wheel of the world’s rarest cheese—Roshefort—slowly comes of age. Join the subterranean race against other teams and battle to be the bearers of the coveted cheese in this madcap multiplayer throwdown.
  • Enter the Underhollow – Tread carefully, and choose your path wisely. Roshan’s labyrinth is home to fearsome beasts, cunning obstacles, and of course, a priceless wheel of cheese. Work together to explore the maze of caves before an enemy team—or worse, Roshan—finds you first.
  • The spoils await you – Survive the enemy onslaught and Roshan’s advance to claim victory and liberate the Roshefort Wheel. In addition to the joy of defeating your enemies, and the thrill of outlasting the competition to escape the Underhollow, you might be in line for an influx of Battle Points.

By its definition this isn’t actually a full on battle royale mode, moreso a multi-pronged raid where separate teams all end up at the same place engaging in good old fashioned PvE content. There are enough elements there, though, that the nod to battle royale is appropriate such as the shrinking danger sole, the last-man-standing aspects, and the ability to squad up. There currently isn’t a release date for The Underhollow, though according to Dota 2 it is ‘coming soon.’

Dota 2 is now available on Steam.
