The major streaming services all seem to be heavily leaning into the world of video games for exclusive content these days, with Netflix perhaps being the most prolific in that particular endeavor. Netflix found early success with the trend, finding gems in its Castlevania anime and live-action adaptation of The Witcher. As for video games, Cuphead proved to be an ambitious little game that has come closest to replicating classic 2D animation. This proved fruitful enough to lead to Netflix greenlighting a Cuphead animated series. Now, Netflix has renewed the animated series and confirmed the Cuphead season 2 release window.

Cuphead developer Studio MDHR made the new announcement on their official Twitter account recently. After premiering the 12-episode first season premiere on Netflix last month, the developer has confirmed that a second season of The Cuphead Show has now been officially greenlit. Not only that, but it appears that Cuphead season 2 is coming sooner than most would have expected. The new season will arrive sometime this summer exclusively on Netflix. With the new season coming so soon and the production time that animation requires, it is quite likely that season 2 was part of the initial deal, but wasn’t announced until now.

The Cuphead Show has been fairly well-received by audiences and critics. Many have praised its vibrant animation style and faithfulness to the aesthetics of both the Cuphead game and the early 1900s animated projects that inspired it. Little about Cuphead season 2 has been revealed, but the return of Cuphead and Mugman have been confirmed. Still, it is good to see that the series has proven popular enough to endure for a second season, and hopefully, it only means that the franchise lives on beyond its initial video game beginnings.
