BlizzCon 2017 is officially underway, and boy does Blizzard Entertainment know how to throw a party. A lot of announcements came from the convention’s opening ceremonies, many of which surround the globally popular team-based shooter, Overwatch. A new animated short was released, a new hero, and a new map were revealed during the first day of BlizzCon. The new map will finally bring other Blizzard properties into the game via Blizzard World– a theme park based on all of Blizzard’s IPs, but that’s not the only way the company is crossing over their other games into Overwatch. Eight new Blizzard-themed cosmetic hero skins are also on the way, even a Diablo crossover was revealed!

The new skins will pull from World of Warcraft, StarCraft 2, and the latest, emotional animated short involving Reinhardt. In an official Tweet, the Overwatch team announced that all 26 characters, including the freshly announced Moira, will be getting skins and other cosmetic items in early 2018. The Blizzard-themed skins revealed thus far are as follows:

• Barbarian Zarya
• Blackhand Doomfist
• Butcher Roadhog
• Crusader Reinhardt
• Ecopoint Mei
• Magni Bronzebeard Torbjörn
• Nova Widowmaker
• Immortal Orisa

The Overwatch team also announced that the Blizzard-themed skins will be included in the base game loot boxes. This means that instead of timed event-related loot, these new cosmetic goodies will be put into circulation full-time. As many fans of the shooter are aware, event-themed skins and items can be frustrating to acquire, and more often than not are hard to collect in their entirety. These new in-game items being available as regular loot should win over most fans.

During the Overwatch: What’s Next panel at BlizzCon, the team made it sound like this won’t be the first round of cosmetic items added to the base game loot boxes. How often, and how many items will be released is still to be determined, but it’s definitely exciting to see the developers giving more to the fans. Every player has their preferred characters as well as their preferred skins, highlight intros, and now it looks like the customization is about to increase in the best kind of way.
