Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Director Discusses “Emotional” Choices In-Game
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will steer the franchise into uncharted waters, shifting Ubisoft’s flagship title into a full-fledged RPG. As with any RPG, decision making will play an important role in Odyssey. Some, like who should be Kassandra/Alexios’s romantic partner, might come easily to players. However, Ubisoft wants to make sure that players struggle with some of their choices.
In an interview with the Official Xbox Magazine, creative director Jonathan Dumont discussed Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in depth. A huge portion of the interview focused on the moral gray area that many of those choices represent. Fans of the series should love hearing how much freedom Ubisoft will give them.
“We try to say that there are no wrong choices. They’re all choices that you make and they’re all valid. They’ll give you what you are looking for I guess, but I think most of the time people try to be nice. I hope… We have a main storyline that has quite a bit of it inspired by a Greek tragedy so we try to put you into situations where choices will be tough – not necessarily what the impact will be but they’re very emotional.”
Not all of these choices will have a major impact on the massive world of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Instead, some choices simply affect your personal odyssey through Ancient Greece. Dumont made sure to point out that these choices will still have lingering consequences as players progress in their playthroughs.
“Here’s a big storyline and a storyline about making personal choices and those choices will have an impact down the road, or immediately. It’s not about influencing a faction necessarily or having an effect on the main storyline, it is much more about your personal journey.”
After the massive success of Assassin’s Creed Origins, these changes should result in happier players. AC fans have asked for more variety, and now they’ll be receiving it in spades. These complex choices mean that no two playthroughs will be exactly alike. Ubisoft’s next major hit has already promised an unprecedented amount of player freedom. It’s also excellent to hear that many of these decisions will lack a “correct” answer. By letting players forge their own paths, Ubisoft is making Assassin’s Creed Odyssey its most personal game to date.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launches for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 5. Preordering the game provides early access on October 2.
