BioWare Reveals In-Depth Story Revelations for ‘Anthem’ During PAX West

Anthem

Bioware is well known for their ability to craft an amazing story with player’s choices interwoven into a beautiful tapestry of lore. While the company’s next upcoming IP is quite different from their previous RPG franchises like Dragon Age and Mass Effect, the hope is that the brilliant storytelling Bioware has given fans so far will bleed over. While Executive Producer Mark Darrah has been providing fans with tons of information about Anthem in recent weeks, story details have been a little light. Thanks to Bioware’s Casey Hudson however, this will all change very soon.

Hudson explains in a recent blog post from Bioware that the vast amount of questions that were asked to Mark Darrah concerning Anthem pertained to the game’s story and characters. He mentioned:

Anthem’s Executive Producer Mark Darrah has been doing a tireless job answering questions on Twitter so I won’t attempt to expand on that here. But some of the most frequent questions we’ve had – which weren’t fully explored in our demo – had to do with story and character. Specifically, “how can there be agency of your story in a living world that you share with friends?”

How the story will be affected by the design of a shared open world is an interesting question, however Hudson feels that it has been solved in an innovative way that they’re calling “Our World, My Story,” which was briefly touched upon during EA Play this year.

In the dynamic open world, everything is experienced in real-time by all Anthem players – day/night, weather, and world-scale events that shape the ongoing narrative of the setting. This is “our world,” which we share as a player community. Then when you return to Fort Tarsis, that’s actually a single-player experience, and it’s where you spend time developing relationships, making choices, and seeing consequences. That’s the “my story” part.”

Knowing how the story works is all well and good but many players are still eager to see the tale in action and learn more before its release next year. Thankfully, it seems that fans will get their chance at this year’s PAX West according to Hudson where Bioware will be holding a panel where they’ll go further into details about their new IP than ever before, especially concerning the story itself and the characters.

Anthem has been getting a lot of attention from fans and Bioware’s publisher has been well pleased with all the excitement. Will the developer be able to deliver a strong narrative within a shared open world? Let us know your thoughts on the upcoming reveal and Bioware’s Anthem in the comments section below.
