Retailer Warns Street Fighter II Anniversary SNES Cartridge Could “Overheat or Catch Fire”

Street Fighter II SNES cartridge

Though Street Fighter V’s DLC game is currently going strong, it is occasionally nice to take a nostalgia trip back in time and play the earlier games in the series, like Street Fighter II.  Retailer ima8bit certainly agrees, as the company is producing a special 30th Anniversary Edition cartridge of Street Fighter II for the SNES.  With a total of only 5,500 being made, the $100 trip back in time includes a tri-fold box w/ foil, “Retro pack-in surprises,” and a premium instruction booklet.  All in all it sounds like a great purchase for those that loved the first sequel of the Street Fighter franchise – as long as you have a fire extinguisher handy.

This is not a joke; according to the iam8bit product page for the SNES cartridge, “Use of this reproduction game cartridge (the ‘Product’) on the SNES gaming hardware may cause the SNES console to overheat or catch fire.  The SNES hardware is deemed a vintage collectible, so please exercise extreme caution when using the Product and make sure there is fire extinguishment equipment nearby.  Use of the Product is at the sole risk of the user.”

So that’s exciting.  The above clarification helps, though; iam8bit is simply warning potential buyers that they still need to concern themselves with the state their SNES hardware is in.  After all the SNES is a very old console, with its original release dating back to 1990.  Further down the product page, iam8bit goes on to say that both the retailer and Capcom are making no “representation or warranty, express or implied” that the Street Fighter II SNES cartridge is safe to use.  The company further states that Nintendo is not involved with the 30th anniversary edition Street Fighter II SNES cartridge in any way.  Those still looking to pick the $100 cartridge up should play with caution.
