Xbox Scarlett And PS5's SSD Will Have Biggest Impact On Open World Games, Says Dev

Gamers are on the cusp of a new generation of consoles, with both Microsoft and Sony leading the charge with the Xbox Scarlett and the PlayStation 5, respectively. While there are plenty of new features and specs to mull over, the sheer performance increase thanks to the new hardware has many excited for the next generation, including open world game developers, who will arguably getting the most out of the latest consoles thanks to their solid state drives (or SSDs).

In a recent interview with GamingBolt, Exception game developer Will Traxler opened up about the benefits of SSDs, and how much of a boon they will inevitably be for open world games. “I think we’re going to see SSDs have the biggest impact on open world titles that constantly stream textures and models into a scene,” Traxler said. “Level-based games like Exception may see less of a benefit from SSDs, since most of the assets are loaded up-front and the load times are already brief.”

I’m sure that developers will come up with some great new uses for SSDs once these become standard in consoles. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes.”

We’ve actually already begun to see how much of an impact SSDs will have, even just for current-gen games. with Sony recently demoing a video comparison between the PS4 Pro and the PS5 using Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man as the subject. From here the sky truly seems to be the limit, making it an excellent time to be a gamer.
