Valve Reveals ‘Index’ VR Headset

Valve Index

Valve co-founder Gabe Newell recently teased fans with the possibility of the long awaited Half- Life 3 arriving within the next 5 years. If that news wasn’t exciting enough, it now seems as though players might even be able to step into Gordon Freeman’s very own HEV suit for themselves thanks to the company’s recent announcement for a VR headset called the “Valve Index”.

The reveal comes by way of the Steam store, complete with a picture of the hardware as well as the text “Upgrade your experience” and a date for May of this year. The Index appears to be similar in appearance to other VR headsets and includes a slider for configuring interpupillary distance seen on multiple current devices as well. Unfortunately, that’s about all the image reveals about surprise announcement of the device.

Valve has had its name associated with VR already with their partnership with HTC and the creation of the HTC Vive. The company doesn’t own this particular property, making the Index their first. With VR continuing to be a focus in the gaming industry, this first-party move bodes well for Valve’s earlier commentary of getting back into the business of making games – not just selling them.
