‘TRON 3’ Production Status and Story Ideas Make Find Way Out of The Grid (INTERVIEW)

TRON 3

TRON! While it may not happen anytime soon, fans finally have some news about the next installment of the Tron movie series. These new details about TRON 3 come from film director Joseph Kosinski of Tron Legacy. While many have thought the film would be dead it appears that isn’t entirely the case.

The TRON franchise isn’t what you could call mainstream Disney. It’s more or less a cult classic, appealing to a few die-hard fans rather than the community as a whole. That being said, it’s not as if TRON didn’t have its success. Two theatrical releases, an animated TV series, multiple games, and a theme park ride are just a few of its accomplishments. Sadly, the third movie installment was assumed to be stuck in the Grid forever. This all changed on February 28th when TRON: Legacy’s film director shed some light on its production status and potential story that would be in the third film.

During a special IMAX screening of TRON: Legacy, Kosinski refused to give up on the seemingly dead project. After questioned about its status by Collider he explained, “I guess I can say that TRON 3 is in cryogenic freeze. So, it’s there. It’s not dead. It’s alive, but it’s sitting there, waiting for the right time to move forward.” He also mentioned that the story of the film would have been under his care and enlightened viewers of the screening on just what that would have looked like:

The movie was called, “TRON: Ascension”, I think that’s out there. I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a ‘Stranger in a Strange Land,’ trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.”

How exciting would that be to see the beings of the Grid invading our world instead of the other way around? In Kosinski’s vision, we would have seen that in full. It’s interesting to note the potential of seeing Quorra find her place in the world. Being one of the last, if not the only of her species, how interesting it would be to see her discovering for herself a purpose and place to call home.
