With San Diego Comic Con here once more, many big projects in television and film have been able to give previews of their work coming in the near future. Perhaps one of the projects that has audiences most excited is Netflix’s live action adaptation of The Witcher starring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. The trailer that premiered during the big Witcher panel yesterday was met with much praise from the internet. While it has been known for some time now that the series will focus more on the written version of Geralt’s stories, many have expressed hope of seeing the storylines from The Witcher games appear in the show. However, The Witcher Netflix showrunner has responded to these hopes in a way that may upset some, but delight others that will take the time to understand.

The Witcher Netflix showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich recently spoke with Prima Games at SDCC this week about the new series. One big topic of concern was over whether or not Hissrich has any intention of adapting storylines from the games during the show’s run. Hissrich opted to respond with a very straightforward answer, saying “the show will never adapt the story from the game.” However, her reasoning for choosing this direction will likely make sense for many, as she wishes for the show to build its own take on the franchise’s world and establish it from the ground up.

Given the sheer amount of content from the books that has yet to be used or seen in the game, this Witcher story will be able to establish the lore and fantasy elements in its own way. This could also work as a way to put fans of the books, games, and those who have not experience either on equal footing and experience the story without plot expectations based on the other sources. While this may anger some fans, given the criticisms Game of Thrones suffered in relation to its source material, maybe this is the smarter choice for ol’ Geralt.
