Super Mario 64 Mod Adds Split-Screen Multiplayer (VIDEO)

Super Mario 64

Super Mario 64 released over 20 years ago and yet, it remains a classic title that many fans enjoy even today. While a majority of Mario titles have been released as a single-player experience, it definitely could have been interesting to see cooperative modes introduced as well. Thankfully, one modder has dared an attempt to bring a split-screen multiplayer experience to Super Mario 64.

Well-known Mario modder Kaze Emanuar stepped up to bring fans what they might not have known they wanted–the ability to team up with a friend to save Peach’s Castle from Bowser. While multiplayer Mario has been done before, what makes this particular mod impressive is its compatibility with the old-school Nintendo 64 console. Check out a demonstration of the mod below.

Though making multiplayer playable on original hardware is quite an achievement, the Super Mario 64 mod does still have a few restrictions. Among several others, if either player dies, the game is said to reset to the previous save point. However, if one player enters a new area. they pull the other player in as well.

Despite these quirks, Emanuar comes to the conclusion that the Nintendo 64 could have easily supported Super Mario 64 cooperative play, with this mod allowing the game to run both screens at the same quality as the single-player experience. Why Nintendo ultimately decided against co-op for the title in the first place is anybody’s guess, but at least the mod gives fans the option to try it out for themselves.

Super Mario 64 is available on the Nintendo 64 as well as emulators on various platforms. Being able to play through the game with a friend could be quite a lot of fun. Emanuar claims that the mod will be ready by February, though no definitive release date was revealed. Let us know your thoughts on the multiplayer mod and more in the comments section below.
