Star Wars Spinoff Films On Hold Following Solo’s Underperformance

It has been nearly a month since Solo: A Star Wars Story released in theaters, so it very well may be safe for Disney to consider their assessment of the film as an underperformer at the box office. With the film barely passing its budget topping $270 million, not to mention additional marketing costs, Lucasfilm is certainly in the hot seat of its parent company, The Walt Disney Company. Before Solo finished its first weekend, it had been made known that Star Wars spinoff films focused on Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett were in the works, but now it would seem that these plans have been put on hold.

Collider recently reported on information from sources close to Lucasfilm regarding their plans for future Star Wars films. According to these sources, Lucasfilm is shelving their planned spinoff films in favor of focusing more attention on the production of the upcoming Episode IX movie that will end the trilogy that started with The Force Awakens.

It does not seem yet like the other movie in the works, including the new trilogy helmed by Rian Johnson or the ones led by David Beinoff and D.B. Weiss. While this does not mean the outright death of the planned Obi-Wan film and the recently announced James Mangold-directed Boba Fett project, it does seem to mean we won’t be seeing these characters in theaters any time soon.

Given the poor box office draw of Solo compared to its budget, it would make sense for Disney to take this course of action. However, many other factors such as box office competition from Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2, plus the mixed fan response to The Last Jedi did make Solo a unique case compared to whatever might have befallen these other spinoff films. Still, there are plenty of other Star Wars projects in the works, so hopefully fans can look to the twin suns with hope. Even if it means we won’t be seeing a Kit Fisto or IG-88 make their respective premieres before we perish.
