Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Film Won’t Follow The Games, But Is “Influenced” By Them
The Star Wars franchise has continued to survive and grow, even after the Skywalker Saga concluded last year. Currently, the second season of The Mandalorian continues to dominate the streaming world, and just last week ten new Star Wars Disney+ original series were announced. Also revealed last week was a new Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie to be directed by Patty Jenkins. Upon its announcement, fans had wondered whether it might follow the story of any Star Wars video games, namely the Rogue Squadron series or the recent Squadrons game. Well, Patty Jenkins has now provided some clarity on the Rogue Squadron film story.
IGN recently shared their interview with Star Wars: Rogue Squadron film director Patty Jenkins. Jenkins is perhaps best known as the director of both live-action Wonder Woman DCEU films, with the newer film Wonder Woman 1984 releasing soon in theaters and on HBO Max. Rogue Squadron is the name of the starfighter squadron in the Star Wars universe led by Luke Skywalker, but is perhaps best known as a series of video games that started with a 1998 Nintendo 64 game. In regards to how much the new movie will follow the story from the games, Jenkins had this to say.
[In the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie] we’re doing something original with great influence from the games and the books. There’s a lot of things being acknowledged and understood about the greatness of all of those things, but yes, it’s an original story and I’m so psyched to do it.”
In the recent announcement video for the Rogue Squadron film, Patty Jenkins said she always wanted to do a fighter craft pilot-focused movie, given her family’s legacy in the Air Force. Given this and these additional IGN comments, it makes sense that the new project will tell a mostly original story, with tangential connections to these previous media entries. Especially considering that the games and books focused on familiar characters like Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles, this new film will provide new characters their chance to shine behind the cockpit of an X-Wing. Let’s just hope someone in the new film says”I feel the need. The need for lightspeed.”
