New Star Wars Games In The Works From Zynga And Disney

Star Wars video game fans have been quite aware of the licensing agreement that The Walt Disney Company has made with Electronic Arts. The agreement has given EA rights to the Star Wars universe in the medium of video games. As such, EA has used the agreement to their advantage, making games ranging from the big budget upcoming Jedi Fallen Order title announced earlier this year, down to the smallest scale of mobile games. This area of gaming looks to be a big area for future growth, enough so for Disney to look to another mobile gaming giant to help the brand. It has now been announced that Zynga will produce new Star Wars mobile games, as well as take over a pre-existing one.

Variety has reported that Disney has established a new mobile gaming agreement with Zynga, the developer best known for their mobile and social media games Farmville and Words With Friends. The agreement will begin by giving operational control of the currently existing Star Wars Commander  mobile game to Zynga’s NaturalMotion Studio, from its current operational staff at Disney Interactive. This seems to be part of a long-term plan by Disney, as Disney’s Senior Vice President of Games and Interactive Experiences Kyle Laughlin states:

“The opportunity with Zynga is the latest step in our mobile games licensing strategy, which pairs Disney characters and stories with proven partners to create unique games for our fans.”

The non-exclusive agreement will also give Zynga the opportunity to develop an original Star Wars mobile game of their design, with the opportunity of additional mobile projects should the first outing prove to be successful. This certainly seems like a smart partnership for Disney to establish for the Star Wars brand. Hopefully this one doesn’t lead to as many Star Cards and $50 season passes as their last one did.
