Sony Trademarks Consoles Up To PlayStation 10 In Japan

Ever since Sony Interactive Entertainment came up with the name PlayStation 2, there has been an underlying question of whether or not the company will, at some point in the future, switch things up and rebrand its flagship gaming console with a different name. Microsoft has in the past gone from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One, while Nintendo is….well, all over the place with its names. It seems, however, that Sony will be keeping its numbered PlayStation consoles, as it has been revealed that the company has recently filed trademarks for the PlayStation 6 through the PlayStation 10.

The news comes by way of the folks over at Gematsu, which reported that Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed trademarks for the short names PS6, PS7, PS8, PS9, and PS10 in Japan. This isn’t the first time Sony has gone ahead and filed for trademakers for the short titles of its upcoming consoles, though this is the first time the company has done so in bulk and for so far out in terms of years. Here’s a history of Sony’s trademark filings for its PlayStation consoles:

  • “PS” (trademarked in 2000, released in 1994)
  • “PS2” (trademarked in 1999, released in 2000)
  • “PS3” (trademarked in 2005, released in 2006)
  • “PS4” (trademarked in 2006, released in 2013)
  • “PS5” (trademarked in 2006, released in 2020)

This of course won’t necessarily stop Sony from going in a completely different direction in the future, though at least it provides a glimpse at the company’s though process for what’s to come. Here’s hoping Sony as a company will last long enough to see the release of the PS10.
