Resident Evil 2 Remake Was Almost In First-Person
The survival horror franchise of Resident Evil has gone through a number of design changes over the years. From the clunky controls and fixed camera of early games, to the over the shoulder perspective with standard controls – the evolution has been prominant. While working on the upcoming Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom contemplated returning to the fixed camera or even using the first person camera perspective used in the franchise’s most recent title.
Resident Evil 2 remained what is considered one of the best games of all time, especially within the survival horror genre. However that’s not to say it wasn’t without its issues. The clunky controls and fixed camera worked at the time however modern titles have all but done away with those designs. According to a recent interview, Capcom COO Stuart Turner mentioned that the developers ran into the issue of deciding which direction to take. Should they return to the fixed camera and tanky controls for the sake of nostalgia, or take on an over-the-shoulder viewpoint and standard third person controls. Of course, there was always the option of taking a new direction entirely.
In the end the developers believed that players have grown along with their games and as such would not be as receptive to the old school mechanics. As such they opted for the more modern third person camera and controls which would hopefully appeal to a more broad audience as well as old fans.
The world has moved on and these players have changed. And if we did [introduce old school mechanics], these fans might play it and actually decide it’s not what they wanted after all. But we played around with a few things in development. We did try first-person, we did try fixed camera. But the way the game has been designed, we decided that a third-person view works better.”
The remake of Resident Evil 2 is set to release on January 25th of next year. Is it a good thing that the team decided against the classic design or first person in favor of modern third-person controls?
