PS5, Next Xbox Unlikely To Have Cross-Play As Defining Feature, Says Dev
While there’s still a good amount of time left on the horizon for the current PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the future of console gaming is gearing up for its arrival sooner rather than later. A number of features are expected to be a focus of the proposed PS5 and the next Xbox, such as esports capabilities and backward compatibility, but it seems some popular features may as prominent as others.
Well, that’s the opinion of Juggler Games developer Lukasz Janczukco, who revealed as such in an interview with GamingBolt. When discussing the topic of cross-platform play, Janczukco disagreed with the idea of cross-play being a “defining feature” for next-gen consoles. While acknowledging the benefits of universal multiplayer, he believes the feature’s lack of compatibility with all games may keep it from becoming a truly large focus.
For sure there are games and genres that will benefit from this solution. It will make easier for communities to share fun and experience. However cross platform in my opinion won’t work universally for all the games so it’s hard for me to believe that it will be defining feature.”
Playing online games with everyone is undoubtedly the goal with multiplayer, but appears that it may not matter as much to everyone. Sure, cross-play is an appetizing idea in many respects, but it wouldn’t be too useful for games without a multiplayer feature such as God of War. For this reason, it would make sense why next-gen cross-play wouldn’t be considered a “defining feature”, despite its obvious advantages.
What do you think? Do you think cross-play will take a back seat for the PS5 and next Xbox, or do you feel it will only continue to gain traction?
