PlayStation 5 Sales Top 20 Million Units, Despite Shortages
While the new generation of video game consoles have now been made available for almost two years now, much of this life cycle so far has been characterized with real-world obstacles. While the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have been in high-demand since their launch, scarcity of necessary raw materials and other supply chain issues have made the devices difficult for many to obtain. Despite this, the PS5 has still been able to gradually and consistently sell units, becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation device ever. Now, it has been confirmed that PlayStation 5 sales have topped 20 million units despite all the odds.
GamesIndustry.biz recently reported on the milestone achieved by Sony. According to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Head of Global Sales and Business Operations Veronica Rogers, PlayStation 5 sales worldwide have surpassed 20 million units, despite supply chain issues and scarcity of raw materials. Rogers offered the following statement as a thank you to all PlayStation fans:
Since PS5’s launch, our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a truly next-gen gaming console that has won the world over and we want to take this time to thank the fans for their support. Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives us and what inspires us to innovate new technology, engineer the future of gaming, and continue creating the best place to play.”
Rogers also states that ramp up production of PS5 consoles this year so that fans who have been unable to obtain a PS5 so far would have a better chance of finding one in the near future. A new report from Sony also showed that the PS5 sold much quicker in its first fiscal year compared to the PS4. The PS5 sold 80,000 units in 82 minutes, whereas the PS4 needed 9 days to sell that many units. While PlayStation 5 sales are not yet reaching the same total unit and dollar sales numbers as the PS4 did at this point in its life cycle, it is on pace to meet and surpass it in its fourth year. Hopefully this means more PS5’s for all and more Dual Sense controllers in the sticky Dorito dust-laden hands of gamers.
