PlayStation 5 Console Design Explained By Sony's Jim Ryan

It’s been an interesting 24 hours or so since the long-awaited reveal of the PlayStation 5. Sony certainly did not disappoint, however, showing off a full hour of game reveals immediately followed by the console itself, which may or may not look a bit like Seto Kaiba. Moving right along, with the PlayStation 5 reveal now on everybody’s minds, Sony boss Jim Ryan has opened up about the design of the console and the act of “making something for the 2020s.”

In a recent interview with the BBC, Sony head Jim Ryan spoke about some of the reasoning behind the design of the PlayStation 5. “The PlayStation sits in the living area of most homes, and we kind of felt it would be nice to provide a design that would really grace most living areas,” Ryan said.

That’s what we’ve tried to do. And, you know, we think we’ve been successful in that.”

Per Jim Ryan, the idea appears to involve creating a console that seamlessly blends in to your typical living area while still emphasizing the console’s aesthetics. Speaking to CNET in a different interview, Ryan revealed that the design was intentionally “bold an daring,” with Sony specifically looking to create “something for the 2020s.” Time will determine whether Sony’s design decisions for the PS5 were the correct ones.

The PlayStation 5 is slated to release this Holiday 2020.
