Major Overwatch Update That Requires Reinstall Is A “Remaster,” Says Blizzard

We recently reported on a statement Blizzard made that the next major Overwatch update they’ll be providing the community is major, so much so that it will require folks to reinstall the game entirely. With the debut of the latest hero Ashe and her sidekick B.O.B., there’s also the promise of 6 more characters in the coming future. The dynamics are about to change significantly with the addition of heroes, and some “fundamental” changes are needed to the game client.

The next major patch will have some pretty fundamental changes to the game client. The number of back-end changes we’re putting in is substantial enough that we can’t just patch over the current content efficiently. As a result, when the next patch comes out, the client will fully reinstall itself to handle these changes. We know that this isn’t ideal for people on metered connections, so hopefully this announcement helps you prepare for this coming update.”

Of course, plenty of netizens weren’t happy with the news. After the amount of patches over the years and mostly uninterrupted gameplay, a reinstall can be considered an inconvenience to some. In an email to Kotaku, Blizzard clarifies this requirement and called it a “remaster” patch. It’s intended to make structural improvements for “constrained systems,” reduce the required space needed in the hard-drive, and lay down an optimized foundation for future content and patches. There will be major bug fixes “across many maps” as well.

In the forthcoming patch, the size file is a whopping 50 GB of data. In comparison to its previous 13GB size, this is easily considered a significant change. However, compared to its triple-A counterparts within the industry, it’s not bad by any stretch of the imagination. With typical titles like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey weighing in around 46 GB as a minimum requirement of HD space, it’s safe to say Overwatch is in the ballpark.

At this time, a projected release date has not been announced, but news of it will arrive soon enough. Are you miffed by the inconvenience of a reinstall for Overwatch, or will you bear with it given what Blizzard had to say?
