Nintendo Holds Firm To Their Stance On VR Technology

VR Technology

Virtual Reality continues to rise in popularity and market accessibility continues to grow. That being said, not everyone is onboard with the trending technology, and though it has become a source of focus for many companies, the Big N is not one of them. Nintendo continues to hold firm to their stance against adopting VR technology as well as the other up and coming technological development regarding 4K.

It’s no secret Nintendo has had their qualms with Virtual Reality and the company has not been shy in the past about making their stance known. In an interview with the French publication called Les Numériques, Nintendo France Head Phillipe Lavoue reiterates that at the moment Nintendo as a company is disinterested in tech such as VR technology and 4K.

If you look at VR headsets, I doubt they can appeal to the mainstream. Consumers are not patient with entertainment if you’re not able to deliver an all-inclusive package.

As far as 4K is concerned, is it useful to invest in a technology that has not been adopted by the majority? Where are 4K TVs now? Is it a good idea to invest in a technology before consumers do? We can’t invest in everything. And what novelty would we bring compared to our competitors?

If we do the exact same thing than everyone else, we’re bound to die because we are smaller than them. With the Switch, we offer different uses, adapted to players’ pace of life. Its advantage is being able to fit into your daily life.”

Nintendo once tried to bring VR to players back in 1995 with the stereoscopic 3D headset called the “Virtual Boy”. Unfortunately, the device was cited as a failure for its high price, unimpressive 3D effect, lack of true portability, health concerns, and more. It was then pulled from the shelves within months of its release. With that in mind, it makes sense that Nintendo wants to let the technology mature and become more mainstream before they take the plunge into Virtual Reality. With the recent hits of Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s hard to see a reason for Nintendo to rush into that as well.
