Live-Action Assassin’s Creed Netflix Series Announced
Hollywood seems to be entering what may be a golden age of film and television adaptations of classic video game properties. Big films based on Uncharted and Super Mario are currently in production, and several television series based on hit games like Cuphead and Fallout are also in the works. One big platform that has especially focused on adapting video game properties has been Netflix, which has seen great success with its live-action The Witcher series and Castlevania anime. Now, the streaming giant seems to be aiming for another modern favorite, with their newly announced live-action Assassin’s Creed Netflix series.
Deadline has reported on the new announcement of a live-action Assassin’s Creed Netflix series. It seems that the streaming service has established an agreement with Ubisoft that Netflix will host an Assassin’s Creed tv universe, which they intend to encompass live-action, animated and anime series. Up first will be the live-action series, which will be led by Ubisoft’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik as executive producers.

Altman, the head of Ubisoft’s film and television television, had this to say about the partnership:
For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise. We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”
Fans are probably well aware that this Assassin’s Creed Netflix series is not the first live-action project for the franchise. Ubisoft had previously greenlit the 2016 Assassin’s Creed live-action film starring Michael Fassbender, which was fairly unsuccessful with critics and the box office. No other details about the series are known at this point, but it is probably unlikely that the new series will reference to the 2016 film much, if at all. With this new series planned as the jumping off point for a television universe, it certainly has a lot riding on its back and depending on its success. Hopefully Ubisoft and Netflix are able to stick the landing with this leap of faith.
