John Wick 4 Confirmed for 2021, “No Happy Ending” Warns Director

John Wick 4

Keanu Reeves is having a busy summer in the film industry. He makes an appearance in Toy Story 4 next month as the voice of Duke Kaboom, and his starring role as John Wick in the third film in the series just opened to a winning $57 million weekend at the box office. That film series has continued to build the franchise’s success with each entry, and combined with Wick’s appearance in Fortnite, it has made the character a household name. Now, Wick’s return has been confirmed with the announcement of John Wick 4, but the film’s director has a foreboding warning for fans.

As reported by Indiewire, alongside an interview with John Wick 3 director Chad Stahelski, John Wick 4 has been confirmed to be in the works and set for a 2021 release. This was confirmed by Lionsgate, who had text messages sent to fans that read “You have served. You will be of service. John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming — May 21, 2021.”  However, Director Chad Stahelski warns fans of the reality of John Wick as a character, and how a happy ending is not a likely outcome for the character. (WARNING: Strong language ahead)

“Honestly, I challenge you right now, here’s a question to you: How do you fucking want me to end it” he said. “Do you think he’s going to ride off into the fucking sunset? He’s killed 300 fucking people and he’s just going to [walk away], everything’s okay? He’s just going to fall in love with a love interest? If you’re this fucking guy, if this guy really exist[ed], how is this guy’s day going to end? He’s fucked for the rest of his life. It’s just a matter of time.”

It makes sense given John’s body count that a happy ending is unlikely, but hopefully his story doesn’t meet a fatal end in the fourth installment. The John Wick series has had some of the best choreography and cinematography in film the past few years. Still, it is a relief to know his story will continue on for at least one more ride. Hopefully, this one doesn’t end with him getting killed by a Fortnite player in a gingerbread man costume.
