Hideo Kojima Criticizes Battle Royale Mode, Rejected It For Death Stranding

Battle Royale Mode

The gaming industry has been influenced by many new introductions the past few years, but perhaps no singular gameplay mode has been as impactful as battle royale. While the multiplayer mode had been present in games before, the likes of Fortnite and PUBG have made it a household name. Now, any game with multiplayer aspects, some even outside of the shooter genre like a Super Mario fan mod, is almost expected to have battle royale mode. However, some are willing to share their critical thoughts on the mode, such as Hideo Kojima, even going so far to shut down the mode from appearing in his upcoming game, Death Stranding.

Kojima recently spoke at a panel this past weekend at San Diego Comic Con 2019, with highlights from the panel having since been shared by attendees like Patrick Shanley on Twitter. During the panel, Kojima confirmed that he had no plans to implement a battle royale mode for Death Stranding. As he said, “The easiest way to make money is to make a game where everyone is on an island trying to shoot each other. I don’t want to make that.”

Death Stranding

Considering the game’s theme of human connection, some have wondered what types of multiplayer gameplay the game might have. Kojima has never been one to stick with conventional video game expectations, and eschewing simple labels such as genre and even peripheral input. It only seems natural that Kojima would ignore such a common multiplayer mode and choose to character his own path with Death Stranding. Perhaps that uniqueness of artistic vision and expression is worth holding onto as tightly as a newborn baby.
