Fortnite Is Activision’s Main Rival, According To Executives

Fortnite

Fortnite has become something of a gaming sensation since its launch from Epic Games. With their free-to-play Battle Royale mode included on all platforms, it has made it difficult for rivals to stack up against it. While the rivalry between Fortnite and PUBG is obvious, it seems that even Activision has taken notice, giving the game a nod as they express their concerns from the game.

To start, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick mentioned that Fortnite was a definite competitor in a recent earnings call. He even went so far as to note their shortcomings in the wake of Fortnite fever. Kotick cut straight to the heart of everything, saying “Fortnite is definitely a lot of competition right now.”

“The idea of new competition is going to be a staple for gaming. For most new franchises, this will be an important mode of play,” he said while speaking about Fortnite’s mega popular Battle Royale mode. Of course, Activision Blizzard is still enjoying tremendous success in many of their titles.

Overwatch is enjoying a dedicated team providing constant updates and new content, while World of Warcraft is digging in for Battle for Azeroth. On the up and coming: Call of Duty Black Ops IIII is in the works with more information on the way. This year has already been treating Activision Blizzard well, but that doesn’t mean CFO Spencer Adam Neumann and others are noticing the success of Fortnite:

[The success of Fortnite] is highlighting the ability to successfully bring immersive gaming experiences like battle royale to mobile in both Western and Eastern audiences, or markets.. And that’s really encouraging as we think about our future mobile opportunities, and our growth opportunities generally as gaming becomes increasingly mainstream.”

It would seem that the company is more interested in taking a cue from Epic Games than outright crushing them. With an ever-evolving landscape of gaming, companies that want to stay relevant will have to adapt. With this kind of attitude, it looks like Activision plans to be around for a good long while yet.
