Fallout: New Vegas Dev Says Obsidian’s Outer Worlds Announcement Was A “F*ck You” To Bethesda
There were many world premieres revealed at The Game Awards 2018, one of the more intriguing of which was Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds. Already being referred to as Fallout in space, the game is being developed by the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas and the creators of the original Fallout, so the similarities were almost guaranteed to happen. Now, a former Obsidian dev has come forward suggesting that a few of the screens within the reveal trailer are a shout-out to Bethesda, and certainly not a nice one.
Former Obsidian Entertainment dev and Fallout: New Vegas senior designer Chris Avellone recently took to Twitter to offer his thoughts on The Outer Worlds trailer, and how it appears to be a slight to the now master of Fallout, Bethesda. Avellone thinks that a few of the Fallout-related screens within the trailer are in fact Obsidian’s way of saying “F*ck You” to Bethesda, which is understandable given the two studio’s histories.

For a bit of backstory, Obsidian once missed out on a massive bonus payment from Bethesda after developing Fallout: New Vegas for Bethesda, as the game’s average Metacritic rating was a paltry one point short of granting the developer the additional pay. That is likely when the relationship between the companies became strained.
Obsidian still expressed interest in working on a Fallout: New Vegas sequel, though Bethesda declined, stating that the company would prefer to create new games without third party assistance. Now, with Obsidian left out in the cold, the developer has reverted to doing what it does best, and that appears to be making a new Fallout game….even if that isn’t actually what the upcoming RPG is called. Now, with the backing of Microsoft, it’ll be interesting to see how worthy of a rival The Outer Worlds can potentially be to the Fallout series, which is now suffering from negative fan feedback given the numerous issues Fallout 76 has had since launch.
The Outer Worlds launches for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One at some point in 2019.
