A Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki Game Almost Came To Be From Nintendo

At some point, Hayao Miyzaki’s Studio Ghibli and Nintendo came together to discuss a game. Unfortunately for us, we’re on the alternative timeline where the game never came to be. Your hearts may now proceed to shatter into a million pieces. Speaking to a French media outlet, a since departed Nintendo artist Yoichi Kotabe revealed plans the company had with the illustrious Studio Ghibli and why the project never came to fruition.

For the record, Hayao Miyazaki and team were keen on developing a game with Nintendo. In the end, it came down to scheduling issues. Kotabe told Le Monde:

Once, with Mr. Ikeda and Shigesato Itoi, the famous commercial sloganser who wrote the slogans for the Ghibli films, we went to see Mr. Miyazaki and offered to work together on a video game for Nintendo. Contrary to what one might think, he did not say no. He told us that what would interest him would be to make a video game that takes place in the universe of insects, and where the player would see the world through the eyes of one of them. But that did not happen, he was busy.”

It isn’t clear when this conversation took place, but fans from all walks of life would likely be interested in a development like a Studio Ghibli game. Whether it is inspired by current film titles like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, or an original idea from their collaborative process, no one would even be mad about it.

Passing on a question to you, do you think a Studio Ghibli video game would be phenomenal? Do you think both Nintendo and Studio Ghibli should get back together and ensure a game like that exists?!
