Dragon’s Dogma 10th Anniversary Site Renews Sequel Speculation

Dragon's Dogma 10th Anniversary

Despite not having a new entry to the series in near of a decade, Dragon’s Dogma sure has been a busy bee in recent years, with PS4 and Xbox One remasters breaking ground back in 2017, followed by a Nintendo Switch port in 2019, and 2020 seeing an anime adaptation brought to life with the streamers at Netflix. With all this in mind, a follow-up to the fantasy hack-and-slash RPG has been rumored to be next from Capcom, and it appears the debut of a new Dragon’s Dogma 10th Anniversary website has reignited such speculation.

As shown on the game’s official website, Dragon’s Dogma is now celebrating 10 years since the title was originally released for PS3 and Xbox 360. Chronicling the entire history of the series thus far, Capcom included little blurbs from the likes of the original digital comic prologue, the main game, the Dark Arisen expansion, as well as the Netflix anime. The site also debuted a piece of artwork depicting the dragon Grigori pointing at the player, paralleling a pivotal scene where the fearsome beast openly challenges the Arisen to slay him.

“Dragon’s Dogma, first released in 2012, is celebrating its 10th anniversary!,” original game director Hideaki Itsuno said in a message displayed on the website. “Thank you, Arisen, for taking up arms and braving through the impossible challenges laid ahead of you. We are forever grateful for your support throughout the years and hope you will join us in this momentous celebration of Dragon’s Dogma!” This statement was shown alongside a Dragon’s Dogma 10th Anniversary video, which can be viewed below,

In the wake of such a celebration, one might easily see it as the latest evidence pointing to Capcom’s all-but-announced Dragon’s Dogma 2. Lending to the idea, Hideaki Itsuno himself has confirmed work on a mysterious new project for a while now and dropped hints of an announcement at the turn of 2022. Multiple leaks have further solidified this idea, with a 2020 Capcom data breach and 2021’s Nvidia game leak suggesting this project may indeed be a Dragon’s Dogma sequel.

Of course, even with all this fanfare over a Dragon’s Dogma 10th Anniversary website, it’s at least possible that Dragon’s Dogma 2 might not be on the other end. This could easily just be a simple retrospective of the medieval-inspired RPG, with no other discernable reasoning behind it. However, a build-up with no payoff may not be in the cards considering Capcom’s current strategy. As per a recent earnings call, “multiple” major games are currently waiting to release in under a year’s time, and if a new DD game is in the pipeline, it could fit that bill pretty well.
