Thor: Love And Thunder Trailer Highlights Villainous Christian Bale

Thor: Love And Thunder

Following the MCU’s grand conclusion in Avengers Endgame, Marvel Studios has spent the last several movies and TV shows establishing a new status quo for each of the team’s beloved characters. We’ve seen new heroes take up old mantles, others establish their own legacies, and even a few multiversal shenanigans take place. When it comes to the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, the latest trailer appears to be setting Chris Hemsworth’s titular Asgardian on a journey of self-discovery.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Thor, and it appears the Avengers’ victory against Thanos has inspired him to get back into ripped shape, or as Korg (Taika Waititi) put it in the new trailer, go from “dad bod to god bod.” However, a surprise arises in the form of “an old ex-girlfriend” Jane Foster, who not only appears as a heroically buffed-up version of her former self (Natalie Portman definitely didn’t skip arm day) but is also deemed worthy enough to wield Thor’s mighty hammer Mjolnir.

The new Thor: Love and Thunder trailer doesn’t dwell too much on the paring of Thor’s two prematurely-ended relationships – Mjolnir and Jane Foster – as the movie’s villain immediately makes his presence known: Gorr, the God Butcher, played by actor extraordinaire Christian Bale. Appearing as the spawn of Hellraiser and one of those mutant goth vampires from Blade 2, Gorr menacingly declares war on all deities (“all gods will die”), putting beings like Thor, Jane, and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie in his butcherous crosshairs.

Outside of the basic plot, the trailer for Love and Thunder has quite a few cool inclusions that fans may find interesting. Firstly, Thor is seen piloting his own ship propelled by flying goats and the hero is even able to travel the Bifrost via his godly ax, Stormbreaker. Regarding Jane Foster, another clever addition was spotted in her use of Mjolnir. As Jane has the ability to throw and recall the hammer at will, like Thor, it looks like she can also propel individual pieces of the broken weapon at enemies as well. Neat!

Wrapping up the footage, Thor: Love and Thunder is lastly teased with an appearance from Russel Crowe as the Greek god Zeus, opening the door for multiple pantheons to show up during the film’s duration. The trailer’s end stinger sees Thor captured by his fellow thunder god, but the meeting hits a snag when an accidental “flick” hilariously disrobes Thor all the way down to his birthday suit. Honestly, if Natalie Portman and Christian Bale weren’t enough to sell this movie, Chris Hemsworth’s naked butt is probably the way to go.

Thor: Love and Thunder releases in theaters on July 8th.
