Destiny 2 Support Will Continue Through 2022, No Plans For Destiny 3

Exciting news for Guardians around the world. Bungie revealed new information on the future of Destiny 2 with a roadmap of expansions, DLC, and various updates to come in the next two years. In order to build a “viable future in Destiny 2,” the team have a long-term vision for the community and that means, for now, there are no plans for Destiny 3.

On June 9th, Bungie took to social media to reveal the latest expansion for Destiny 2 titled Beyond Light. While it won’t hit shelves until later this year, the team wanted to share the ideas they have in store for the community and it involves compiling the feedback they’ve received the past few years and putting it to work. Right now, a sequel didn’t seem like the right path.

“With Destiny 1, we solved the ‘ever expanding, exponential complexity’ problem by making a sequel in Destiny 2,” Bungie explained. “We left behind all of Destiny 1’s content and many of the features players grew to love. We believe now that it was a mistake to create a situation that fractured the community, reset player progress, and set the player experience back in ways that took us a full year to recover from and repair. It’s a mistake we don’t want to repeat by making a Destiny 3. We don’t believe a sequel is the right direction for the game and for the past two years we have been investing all of our development effort into new content, gameplay, and new engine features that directly support a single evolving world in Destiny 2.”

Bungie already has a trilogy of expansions planned through 2022, which includes Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, and Lightfall for 2020, 2021, and 2022 respectively. While growth is inevitable, the development team understands there are underlying issues with space and outdated content. As they propel forward with new and innovative content, maintain popular features and account progress, Bungie plans on balancing the inclusion and exclusion of legacy content as well.

In order to “create a sustainable ecosystem,” Bungie is adopting a new content model they call the Destiny Content Vault. That means that with each year, the team plans on cycling through select destinations and content out of the game and into their vault to make some space for new ones. Of course, it won’t be without letting the community know ahead of time. For more on how they plan on cycling content, check out their blog post here.

Bungie plans on bringing three playable raids, including a brand new one set in the Deep Stone Crypt of Europa. There will be new exotics and ways to earn them, the merge of Gambit and Gambit Prime into a single mode, and more. Beyond Light is expected to launch September 22nd, 2020 with pre-order available now.
