Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 ‘Blackout’ Has an Emote Peeking Problem, Treyarch Responds
The fast-paced Battle Royale genre has come to Activision’s juggernaut Call of Duty franchise, specifically a mode for ‘Black Ops 4’ called Blackout. The mode introduces a vastly competitive multiplayer in the like of Fortnite and Overwatch, and as such can be subject to players utilizing unforeseen glitches to get the coveted victory.
An instance of these misused mechanics has been discovered in the form of “emote peeking,” which utilizes Black Ops 4’s expressive gestures to hide a player behind barriers. This normally wouldn’t be so bad, but it also provides a wider point of view, allowing players to peek around corners without facing any of the danger other players would experience. Check it out in action below.

An exploit like this would surely grant someone an upper hand in battle, albeit through questionably dubious means. The prospect of this cheat becoming commonplace has compelled many fans to voice their grievances on social media, calling upon developer Treyarch to somehow fix the issue.
Responding on the r/BlackOps4 subreddit, Treyarch expressed there were aware of the issue and are currently working on a comprehensive solution. The fix would see emotes, a.k.a. “Gestures,” separated into two systems: one where they’d continue in their current form, and an new system designed for competitive play that would disable the maligned emote peeking entirely.
We’re aware that players have been able to use Gestures (often referred to by the community as “Emotes”) to peek around corners in modes where that can create an unfair advantage. We’re currently working on an update that creates two systems for Gestures – the default system that is in the game now, and a competitive version that disables free look and applies different camera settings to prevent using it to see around corners. The default system will be used in parts of the game where corner peeking won’t affect gameplay balance (like the staging area of Blackout), and the competitive version will be used in modes where a more restrictive camera system is needed. We want players to always have fun with Gestures as intended, but never at the expense of fair gameplay!”
With the launch of Call of Duty Black Ops 4, the game’s full extent of features are only now being revealed. While this will soon exclude emote exploits, inclusions such as an essential day-one update, the first exclusive Blackout character, and a hidden split-screen mode were only just recently made known. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
