Director Joss Whedon Steps Down From DC Batgirl Film

Batgirl Director Joss Whedon

With the Justice League film finally released and the slate of standalone films related to the core members planned, many have been looking to the DC Extended Universe films for the potential new directions that the various series could take. A great deal of positive response when news broke last year that geek-favorite Joss Whedon would be directing a new Batgirl film. However, it appears that Batgirl director Joss Whedon is stepping away from the director’s chair and his reason while surprising might be understandable to some.

New Batgirl Film

The Hollywood Reporter shared the exclusive story on Whedon’s exit from the film. While it appears that Whedon was quite excited by the prospect of leading the charge on this film with the team at Warner Bros., it seems that he was unable to come up with a story that he felt would live up to the expectations of fans, WB and himself. According to Whedon, DC president Geoff Johns and Warner Bros. Picture Group president Toby Emmerich were quite understanding of his decision to leave saying:

Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story. I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed?'”

It is not yet known who will replace Whedon as the director of the film, or the extent that this will affect its production plans. While some fans will likely be disappointed by this news, hopefully they can find hope in a new storyteller for this film soon and understand Whedon’s sacrifice. Hewas wise enough to know that though he is the director Batgirl deserved, he’s not the one she needed right now.
