Next Naughty Dog Game Might Be In First Person, Says Last Of Us 2 Director
February 20th marked the launch of the D.I.C.E. 2018 Summit, a conference that explores the creative process and artistic expression applied to interactive entertainment. During the event, The Last of Us Part II director Neil Druckmann took center stage to discuss his thoughts on development. Among his remarks was a statement that suggested that the next Naughty Dog game could be in First Person.
Typically their games reside in a third-person view where players see the character interact in the game. Druckmann’s favorite games are in third-person as he feels they give him more connectivity with the characters. The game director feels that narrative games can still be done extremely well in the first person, which lead him into discussing The Last of Us and the possibility of changing direction in the next Naughty Dog game.
During development of The Last of Us, the team debated between third and first-person and whether or not the game should be single or multiplayer. Ultimately, they decided on a more intimate third person shot, bringing the player closer to the character and giving the game a little more of a first-person feeling. Druckmann did note that the studio was very much open to the possibility of the next Naughty Dog game being in first-person.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that the next Naughty Dog game will be first-person, only that the team is open to it. For now, they are hammering out The Last of Us Part II which is already ramping up to be more brutal and visually impressive. While there is no release date for the PS4 exclusive, fans can expect to see a lot more of the game at E3 2018.
