Battle Royale titles are predominantly PvP experiences and often have very little story-based elements outside of seasonal trailers such as those used for Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends. While these small tidbits of information are intriguing and help progress the tale that each title is hoping to tell, Respawn Entertainment appears to believe that more can be done to tell the stories they want. A new game mode is now coming to Apex Legends with Season 5, allowing players to work together to uncover a mysterious artifact throughout a season-long quest called “The Broken Ghost.”

While playing Apex Legends competitive matches, players will be able to collect a new item called a Treasure Pack according to a new post from Respawn. These new lootable item packs can only be collected by players once per day and are automatically used when picked up, so there is no worry of losing them upon death or taking up an inventory slot for an entire match. There will be a total of 45 of the packs to collect and each will contain either Crafting metals, BattlePass XP, Apex Packs, or even a chance to unlock Apex Legends’ latest weekly PvE game mode, ‘Hunt.’

The weekly Hunts are special PvE matches that can be unlocked each week and replayed for the remainder of the season. The mode pits players against AI enemies as they track down all nine pieces of a “mysterious artifact” – one that has gained the attention of the newest Legend to enter the game, Loba Andrade. Each mission will further a brand new story in Apex Legends, based around Loba’s quest of vengeance against the assassin who murdered her family. Still, there’s a price to the truth, and as the story unfolds the Apex Games will never be the same.

“Caught between the Apex Games and Hammond Robotics, Loba is spinning a web of lies and deceit in her personal quest for vengeance… but how far is she willing to go?,” Respawn writer Tom Casiello explained in the post. “How does the Broken Ghost fit into her plans for Revenant? And what happens when one Legend stumbles upon the truth? See a side of the Legends’ lives you’ve never seen before… outside of the Games! Alliances will be formed, friendships will be tested, vendettas will be born, and when the dust settles, nothing will be the same again in a mystery that has far-reaching consequences for them all.”

Apex Legends and the brand new season are currently available for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The first of the Broken Ghost Hunts will be available on May 19th, but only after players collect their fifth Treasure Pack. After the initial Hunt begins, more will become available each subsequent week until all 9 are able to be unlocked.
