While a majority of the Assassin’s Creed franchise features a strong connection to people, places, and even stories from moments in history, the series has also played around with ambiguous folklore and mythical creatures such as tales about Jack the Ripper, Egyptian Gods, Medusa, and even the Minotaur of Greek mythology. While the developers have yet to go into too much detail on the upcoming Nordic setting of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, fans are sure to be seeing unique tales unfold from 9th Century England and late Anglo-Saxon folklore. A new leak seems to indicate that the classic tale of Beowulf will be one of those that are incorporated into the game.

A new listing on the German Ubisoft store reveals that the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla season pass will include a story mission translated as “The Legend of Beowulf”, letting players uncover the truth behind the Old English legend. The story of the epic Nordic figure has been retold numerous times throughout history (including a big-budget animated film from 2007), but it’s currently unknown how this particular tale might incorporate into a game like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Nonetheless, the developers at Ubisoft have had a knack for delivering some unique and wonderful stories that blend in with their narrative.

As the tale goes, Beowulf was a hero of the Geats who went to the aid of the King of the Danes whose mead hall had been under attack by a monster known as Grendel. Beowulf manages to slay the monster and later Grendel’s mother as well before returning to his country to become king of the Geats in what would be modern-day Norway. Could we possibly see these events recreated in the upcoming Ubisoft title? Only time will tell just what developers have in store for fans as they live out the life of Eivor and their Nordic brethren.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is scheduled to launch during the Holiday season of this year for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Google Stadia. The title is also set to be available on next-gen consoles such as Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Are there any other tales from the 9th Century that you’d like to see explored in the upcoming title?
