Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Brings Back James Gunn as Director
Following Disney’s decision to fire Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn for offensive Twitter posts, it seemed that the space-faring series was thoroughly finished for the foreseeable future, especially as Gunn was tapped to write and helm DC’s upcoming Suicide Squad sequel. However, it seems the House of Mouse has relented and welcomed Gunn back into the fold, as Marvel is officially bringing him back for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
According to Deadline, the delayed trilogy-ending project has indeed seen the return of its director James Gunn, with representatives from both Marvel and Gunn confirming the news. The report states that Disney Studios president Alan Horn reversed the firing after the director’s “public apology and his handling of the situation,” the official decision having actually been made “months ago” after meeting with the director multiple times.
The return of James Gunn is one that occurs after considerable drama happening over social media. The initial discovery of disgusting Twitter posts by Gunn was shocking to say the least, one that resulted in Disney’s swift ousting of the successful filmmaker. However, many were one to come to the director’s defense, especially as a majority of the offensive statements made were from over 10 years prior; well before his work on Guardians of the Galaxy ever began.
It was argued that Gunn’s questionable character had evolved in the time since those tweets, with both online fans and loved ones calling for Disney to reverse their decision. This fervor for redemption culminated last July in a group effort by the entire Guardians of the Galaxy cast, each member assuring the director’s changed nature and voicing support for his rehiring.
