What Went Wrong With The Halo: Master Chief Collection And How To Fix It
When the Halo: Master Chief Collection released years ago, the game was praised for the improvements made to the series’ single player campaigns. Unfortunately, that praise didn’t carry over to the multiplayer aspect of the collection which was riddled with issues like the continuous issues with matchmaking. Thankfully, these irritating bugs will have a chance to make it right with the upcoming re-release of the Master Chief Collection on the Xbox One X.
According to Frank O’Connor, the Development Director for the Halo franchise, the real reason behind the re-release is due to the changes within the OS and networking changes made for the Xbox One. Because of that, the team now has a chance to improve upon the previous release, as well as a fresh start with the Xbox One X.
In terms of chicken/egg scenarios, fixing the existing ‘vanilla’ Xbox One MCC was the Chicken that laid the Xbox One X enhanced version egg.”
O’Connor then laid out the reasoning for the various multiplayer issues and how they plan to go after them. Originally, the developers only intended to remaster Halo 2 but later decided to work on all of the Master Chief titles to put them all on one console. Sadly, in doing so, the team was unable to properly test the matchmaking environment which ended with less than desirable results for the end product a few years ago.
Fundamentally it was because we were testing in an environment that we had set up incorrectly and with some (as we discovered later) faulty assumptions and unlike some of our other normal testing cycles, we weren’t testing for gameplay balance and stuff that the original releases already contained so our test process was radically different, and we made mistakes in some of the scenarios we asked for.”
Various other bugs only made the matchmaking issues even more problematic. Armed with their current knowledge and expectations, 343 Industries hopes to learn from their mistakes and improve not only the original Halo remakes, but the future of Halo as well.
