Diablo Immortal PC Version Announced, First Gameplay (VIDEO)
As teased beforehand, Activision Blizzard has officially announced a new release date for Diablo Immortal, with the mobile-focused dungeon crawler now releasing for Android and iOS devices on June 2nd. The unveiling was shown off in a new trailer, but it wasn’t the brunt of the publisher’s big announcements. A PC version was also confirmed to be on the way, scheduled to launch into a free-to-play Open Beta period sometime during the month of June.
As detailed in a new blog post, Blizzard took considerable measures to ensure Diablo Immortal – a game “built from the ground up” for mobile – would find a home on PC. Touting full cross-play and cross-progression support, devs urged players that the final product would “feel a little different” from the usual Diablo PC experience, as Immortal was essentially designed with “finger tapping and swiping controls” in mind from the beginning.
With that in mind, Blizzard assured a few “adjustments” in store for the PC version to appeal to the platform’s unique sensibilities, including staples like mouse and keyboard support, a smaller HUD to accommodate bigger screens, and the ability to rebind controls to whatever one prefers. In addition, Diablo Immortal will allow players to move via the WASD keys, but the classic point-and-click method will still be there for series purists. Controller players are also in luck, as gamepads are supported on PC as well as on mobile.
The team makes it clear that the decision to pursue a PC version isn’t being taken lightly, lending to the idea of an Open Beta format, which would offer the opportunity to regularly change and fine-tune various aspects based on player feedback. When the Beta period ends, the PC version is intended to continue operating as normal, with all in-game progress and purchases carrying forward into the final version. In addition to the announcement, Game Informer debuted the first footage for the port, which can be viewed below.
Originally announced back in 2018 to a very chilly reception, Diablo Immortal has had an uphill battle in proving itself to franchise fans. Far from the PC-centered experience fans were expecting at the time (well before the announcement of Diablo IV), Blizzard has spent the past few years tweaking and fine-tuning Immortal behind the scenes, so much so that some have actually been described as “enthusiastic” about the upcoming mobile title.
Taking place between the events of Diablo II and Diablo III, ‘Immortal’ boasts the largest scale of any Diablo game before it, featuring eight distinct zones, legions of enemy encounters, and an eight-player raid mode, with even more space being saved for potential expansions and regular live events occurring down the line. Those interested in pre-registering for the PC Open Beta can currently login and do so on the official Blizzard website.
