PlayStation 5 2022 Sales Projections Lowered Due To Ongoing Shortages
The folks over at Sony are riding high following the recent announcement of the company’s acquisition of Bungie, which brings yet another well-known developer into the fold. Alas, this does little to comfort the legion of fans that have yet to obtain a PlayStation 5 due to scalpers, scammers, and ongoing component shortages. Now, the latter issue has caused Sony to lower its PlayStation 5 sales projections for the rest of the year.
In a recent Q3 earnings call, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki explained that sales projections for the PlayStation 5 are being substantially lowered due to global distribution issues. “Due to limitations on the supply of components – especially semiconductiors – and an increase in delivery times resulting from the disruption of the global distribution supply chain, we have revised our FY21 unit sales forecast for PS5 hardware to 11.5 million units,” Totoki said.
Limitations on the supply of components are expected to continue going forward, but we are continuing to exert every effort to meet the strong demand for PS5.”
Elsewhere in the call, Totoki explained that Sony intends to “catch up” from the impact of the shortages, though the CFO sets the expectation that the company will continue to run into production issues. [We are working closely with] our partner companies supplying us with components – collaborating, negotiating and working with them closely,” Totoki said. “We hope we can make that happen, but in terms of [PS5], I think it’s safe to say that we will continue to have supply disruption in terms of the components globally, because of the distribution problems and so on. So we can’t say for sure what is exactly the demand for next year.”
There will likely be an even greater demand for the PlayStation 5 going into the rest of the year given the slate of titles set to release, so hopefully Sony will be able to do something to keep up production in the meantime.
