DOOM Eternal Invasion Multiplayer Scrapped For Solo Horde Mode
Once upon a time, id Software had plans for a PvP mode within DOOM Eternal’s campaign mode called Invasion. Originally set for sometime after launch, it would’ve played out similar to games in the Dark Souls franchise, where players “invade” another player’s campaign as a demon in order to make the game more challenging. Up to this point, such a mode hasn’t made it into the game, even as the game added the multiplayer Battlemode, which sees two players take on the role of demons and fight against the DOOM Slayer alongside their AI minions. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that players will ever see the Invasion mode happen, with the developers now choosing to go down a different path.
A recent Tweet from id Software brings with it a development update detailing some changes coming to the game in the future. The core focus of the post explains that remote work in the current pandemic has “impacted the progress of development” of Invasion, with efforts now “redirected” elsewhere for DOOM Eternal. This, along with positive feedback from fans regarding current expansions and master levels, has inspired the developers to scrap Invasions in favor of a “totally new” single-player horde mode.

The post states that developers are confident the unnamed horde mode will bring players the “diversity and challenge” in content that DOOM Eternal players are looking for. For those that enjoy the multiplayer aspect of the title, id Software is also looking to revamp Battlemode to include a “more competitive, rank based structure” as well as some “gameplay and balance updates” along with a new map. The post didn’t have much more to say about the upcoming changes but confirmed that the team would have more to share at QuakeCon this August.
DOOM Eternal is currently available for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One X/S, and PlayStation 5.
