Season 2 of The Mandalorian is just around the corner, looking to give fans more adventures alongside main character Dyn Jarren, Baby Yoda, and their allies. This season will see the armored hero going head to head against Moff Gideon (who made an impressive entrance last season) as he tries to protect The Child from an ever-growing threat. Whatever happens this season, there’s sure to be more to come and showrunner Jon Favreau recently discussed plans for a third season of the show and beyond.

Sitting down with Variety, Favreau explained that the team is on track to start filming Season 3 before the end of the year. As there is no specific date scheduled, it’s still possible filming may get pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Favreau explained that the team is operating under the assumption they’ll be able to move forward with their plans relatively soon. With this in mind, production might be waiting until The Mandalorian himself Pedro Pascal is able to put the helmet back on, as the actor is currently filming on his latest project ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ with Nicholas Cage.

Favreau noted that The Mandalorian is in a unique situation for a TV series, where characters are often on a small set and feature characters in a mask of some sort, allowing for greater flexibility when filming with safety in mind. As the production also uses digital production techniques with a reliance on special effects and editing, the producer also suggested that these conditions might make it relatively easy to adapt to the ever-changing protocols in the current pandemic.

Along with details about next season’s plans for the show, Favreau also hinted at the possibility of seeing a Mandalorian film in the future. He explained that the popularity of the show could potentially spawn something much greater than itself and grow into its own cinematic universe. However, hopeful fans may be in for a wait, as he explained that he is in “no rush” to bring Mando to the big screen right now, while still being “open” to the idea. The series certainly has a lot of potential for new stories and spin-offs at the moment, but how the franchise gets handled in the future isn’t something that is fully mapped out at the moment, according to Favreau.

I love the world of ‘Star Wars’ because, on the one hand, there’s a familiarity with this sub-genre, but there’s also a tremendous amount of flexibility of which way you can go and genres you could explore within that sub-genre. As we’re meeting new characters, and as we’re starting to hit our stride, from a production standpoint with how this technology can be used, we are beginning to explore where we could go.”
