PlayStation 5 Won't Feature A New Version Of PSVR At Launch

Based on all we’ve heard thus far, Sony’s PlayStation 5 will likely come packed with all the tools it needs to be considered worthy competition for Microsoft’s next console iteration. While the launch of a new generation of consoles typically brings with it an update to peripherals and accessories, it appears that a new version of PlayStation VR (PSVR) will not be available at the launch of the PS5.

In a recent interview with CNET, Dominic Mallinson, Sony’s Global Head of R&D, spoke about the future of PSVR and how it relates to the PlayStation 5. According to Mallinson, the current version of PSVR will be fully compatible with the PS5. As such, there are no plans to release a new headset for quite some time. “There’s no reason for us to coincide it with a new console,” Mallinson said.

From the point of view of the consumer, to be bombarded with many, many things – oh, you have to buy this, you have to buy that – is a message that we don’t want to send. In some ways, it’s good to have a little breathing space between those things.”

This should likely put a lot of PlayStation fans at ease, as the cost of a new console with accessories to match can add up very quickly. This certainly won’t be the end of the development cycle for the PSVR, either, as Mallinson also mentioned that Sony is looking to make some improvements in the future. “We do want it to be lighter weight, and easier to put on, less cables, less mess.” There are also plans to implement eye-tracking software.

Despite the noted lack of a new PSVR planned for the launch of the PlayStation 5, we at least know now some of what to expect from the next iteration. Here’s hoping it will live up to expectations.
