Warner Brothers Reportedly Pursuing Leonardo DiCaprio For Joker Origin film

Leonardo DiCaprio Joker Origin Film

It is well understood that Warner Brother’s DC Extended Universe was created as a response to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both of which have majorly impacted the modern film industry. However, the responses to WB’s most recent films have been everywhere from widely lauded to nearly universally panned, with the latter being the response to Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice.  In light of the DCEU’s mixed reviews, it appears that Warner Bros. is looking to alter the playing field by focusing on film styles not currently being produced by Marvel. To that end, new reports indicate that Warner Bros. is pursuing Leonardo DiCaprio for a Joker origin film.

The report published by The Hollywood Reporter states that Warner Bros. has been in talks with Academy Award winning director Martin Scorsese, hoping that he will produce a new Joker origin film. It would appear that WB’s intent for this film is to tell the story of the infamous Batman villain’s rise in the 1980s in a serious crime drama film-style, not unlike Scorsese’s most famous films. Although many would wonder why WB would court such a high-profile, notoriously controlling film auteur for a franchise comic film, the report indicates that WB’s hope is that the inclusion of Scorsese might lead to his convincing his longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio to don the clown makeup and become the Joker. DiCaprio has not officially been approached by Warner Bros., and the talks with Scorsese have not finished yet, but if this project comes to fruition, this would certainly be an interesting take on Gotham’s greatest criminal.
