The Smurfs Video Game Now In Development
While the trend has somewhat waned in recent generations due to the rising costs of console game development, video games based on licensed properties are still a common bet that game publishers will take. Nowadays, licensed games tend to focus more on modern franchises, but older classic franchises still find ways to appear in video games. Robocop and Evil Dead fans are certainly aware of and thankful for this occurring in Mortal Kombat 11. Now, it looks like the classic animated series The Smurfs will be seeing a return to video games in a new title developed by Microids.
French publisher Microids recently announced their new partnership with IMPS on their official website. IMPS is the company that currently holds possession of The Smurfs IP, and has assured fans that the new game will hold true to the original source material, namely the Smurfs comics created by Belgian artist Peyo. In regards to the new agreement, Microids vice president Elliot Grassiano had this to say:
We are delighted for concluding this new partnership with IMPS! Thanks to this trans-generational license and the talent of OSome Studio, a long time Microids partner studio which worked on several family games, we are confident in bringing together all gamers in the wonderful world of the Smurfs.”
The new Smurfs game will be a 3D action-adventure game, which will be developed by OSome Studio. All of these companies involved are all based in France, where The Smurfs (or Les Schtroumpfs) are especially beloved and hold a high place in the nation’s popular culture. Surely, this means they will all capture the spirit of The Smurfs much better than the live-action Smurfs films did. I really don’t need to see The Smurfs playing Guitar Hero again any time soon.
