Fallout Fans Will Love The Outer Worlds’ Vats-esque Combat

The Outer Worlds

Obsidian Entertainment’s next big RPG may not have a concrete release date, but that isn’t stopping fans from getting excited about the title. The Outer Worlds is looking to be quite the wild ride, and seeing as it’s coming from the creators of the original Fallout and Fallout: New Vegas, they couldn’t help but inject a bit of the beloved series into the new game. This is rather apparent when it comes to the combat featured in The Outer Worlds.

“I don’t want anyone to either think our combat’s boring, but I also don’t want them to think there was too much rote combat in the game,” co-director Tim Cain recently told Game Informer. “I want them to come away thinking that combat was exciting, it was fun when it happened, it was a little scary—you could always die, there’s always a chance you could die—but that if you basically thought about it and were tactical, you could get through pretty much any encounter.”

That said, The Outer Worlds features a combat mechanic called “Tactical Time Dilation,” or TTD. This ability essentially slows down time, allowing players to focus and get the shot right, much akin to Fallout‘s VATS. While TTD won’t give you percentages and whatnot for the various parts of an enemy, it is quite reminiscent of VATS and does grant bonuses when dispatching enemies.

In addition to the TTD aspect of combat, players will have a host of weapons to choose from in The Outer Worlds. Different weapon types are also featured in the game, including the likes of kinetic, melee, and energy. Of course, while taking down the bad guys, players will have companions that do their part, each with their own abilities. Perks can even be assigned to these characters, which should make anyone’s adventure a good one.

The Outer Worlds has no release date as of yet, but it is expect to arrive at some point in 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Keep it tuned to Don’t Feed the Gamers as this story develops, and for other gaming goodness going on right now, check out the following:
