The Mandalorian Director Opens Up About That ‘Baby Yoda’ Reveal

The Mandalorian Director Opens Up About That Big 'Baby Yoda' Reveal

Chapter 13 of Disney’s The Mandalorian TV series managed to be one of the most popular episodes yet due in no small part to the arrival of Ahsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson. Seeing the character so lovingly developed throughout The Clone Wars TV series make the successful jump to live-action was enjoyable enough on its own, though Chapter 13 also held a surprise reveal in the form of the real name of everyone’s beloved ‘Baby Yoda’. For those that would rather find that out for themselves by watching the show, turn back now.

During the events of Chapter 13, Ahsoka Tano reveals to Din Djarin that the name of  The Child’ is Grogu, much to the surprise of the majority of the viewers that didn’t expect such a weighty reveal. According to the episode’s director, Dave Filoni, the time was right for the name ‘Baby Yoda’ to disperse into the ether in favor of The Child’s true name. “The name has been around for a while,” Filoni told Vanity Fair. “Jon [Favreau] told me early on in Season One what it would be, which made me start to think about how people could learn the name. This gave me the idea that Ahsoka, who is very compassionate, would be able to connect with the child, and that without words they could probably communicate through memories and experiences.”

Through that connection, she learns the name and then tells Mando and the audience.”

Having Ahsoka Tano be the one to reveal The Child’s name to Din Djarin is certainly poignant in its own way, also acting as a gratifying payoff for those that watched The Clone Wars TV series. “I felt that if anyone would know or understand The Child’s history it would be Ahsoka,” Filoni said. “She has such a long history as well. By having her relate the story it also helps the viewer to understand some of her own backstory.”

Season 2 of The Mandalorian is now streaming exclusively on Disney+.
