The Last Of Us TV Series Now In Development At HBO

It looks like Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us is jumping to a new medium! While the sequel to the award-winning video game is still slated to release later this year, the folks over at HBO have announced that they will be producing a new TV series based on the events from the original game.

According to the folks over at The Hollywood Reporter, Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin will be helming the project and will be joined by Neil Druckmann, writer and creative director of The Last of Us, who has signed on as an executive producer. The project will be the first TV series from PlayStation Productions, and it will be a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Naughty Dog.

The TV series will reportedly cover the events from the original game, which tells the story of Joel, a hardened survivor, who is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl, Ellie, across the U.S. There is also the possibility that the TV series will extend to cover the events of the sequel, which is slated to release on May 29, 2020. “From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig, I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us,” said Neil Druckmann.

With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.”

The love of course goes both ways, with Craig Mazin praising Neil Druckmann for his work as a storyteller. “Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus,” Mazin said. “Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.”

The Last of US TV series is now in development.
