The Elder Scrolls 6 Is “Still In Design Phase,” Says Todd Howard
The gaming industry has many darling fan-favorite developer/publishers, but perhaps none are as consistently pleasing towards fans like Bethesda Softworks. The publisher behind the Fallout and Doom games has delighted many, and has fans eagerly their big upcoming new sci-fi franchise Starfield. Perhaps the biggest feather in Bethesda’s cap is the Elder Scrolls series, which to this day still has a big playerbase with their latest major titles in the series, Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls Online. With the next core entry in the series having been confirmed to be in development, a new update from Bethesda about The Elder Scroll 6 suggests there will still be a significant wait.
Bethesda’s Todd Howard recently spoke with The Telegraph about Bethesda’s latest projects in the works, namely Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6. Howard suggests that Bethesda’s main focus right now is on Starfield, which is set to release late next year. Starfield is utilizing the next-gen Creation Engine 2, which is going to be used as a tech bed for their other projects, including The Elder Scrolls 6. However, that next Elder Scrolls game is still quite early in development, as Howard states:
It’s good to think of The Elder Scrolls 6 as still being in a design [phase]… but we’re checking the tech: ‘Is this going to handle the things we want to do in that game?’ Every game will have some new suites of technology so Elder Scrolls 6 will have some additions on to Creation Engine 2 that that game is going to require.”
Bethesda had previously suggested that fans would not see significant updates or looks at The Elder Scrolls 6 until Starfield is released, and these comments certainly point towards Starfield being the higher priority for Bethesda at the moment. Given how complicated that core Elder Scrolls games can be, it certainly will work for the game’s benefit that the design of the game is made carefully with as much time needed as possible. Hopefully though, Starfield’s development doesn’t take an arrow to the knee so that Bethesda can then shift their focus towards the new Elder Scrolls sooner rather than later.
